The telnet service is used to provide telnet command prompt access to a Windows computer. When this service is enabled the computer will listen on port 23 for incoming telnet connections. A telnet connection is a simple text tunnel that allows a remote user to browse the contents of a computer's hard-drive. For the majority of users this feature is not needed. Because of this you should leave this service on disabled as it is a security risk if left open.
If you wish to use this service then you need to add the user accounts you wish to use this service to the TelnetClients group. This can be done from the user manager (lusrmgr.msc) and from there you will need to create a group called TelnetClients. After the group is created you can add the user to the group. You will also need to set a password on the account as blank passwords, at least in XP, cannot be used, by default, for remote connections. This is a security system that should never be altered. It should be noted that telnet connections transmit in clear text, meaning that anyone sniffing the connection will be able to read the username and password transmitted without fancy decoding software. Once connected you will be prompted for the username, then for the password and then you will be dropped to the prompt upon authenticating. |
