Services Utility: Routing and Remote Access Service Display Name (?): | Routing and Remote Access | Short Name (?): | RemoteAccess | Executable (?): | svchost.exe | Library (?): | mprdim.dll | Depends On (?): | Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service | Supports (?): | None. | Description (?): | Offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area network environments. | OS (?): | NT4 Workstation, 2000 Professional, XP Home/Professional, Vista Home/Business, NT4 Server, 2000 Server, Server 2003, Vista Server | Startup (?): | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | Manual | Manual | Manual | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The routing and remote access service allows you to set up dial-up and virtual private network (VPN) features from your Windows computer. This means that you can allow people to either dial-in and use internet or intranet resources, or enter through a VPN over the Internet so that the remote computer can use the Internet as if it was on the network of the VPN server. These are mainly used on corporate networks to bypass security protocols implemented through firewalls, but this service can be used by home users as well. If you use these features I would suggest setting this service to automatic, and if you don't use them then I suggest disabling this service. |

"Oh yes. That's how it starts. But the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter then we think... For the first link the chain is formed. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." --Captain Jean Luc Picard (ST TNG, Drumhead)
