Services Utility: Remote Storage Notification Service Display Name (?): | Remote Storage Notification | Short Name (?): | Remote_Storage_User_Link | Executable (?): | RsLnk.exe | Library (?): | None. | Depends On (?): | Event Log, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) | Supports (?): | None. | Description (?): | Notifies users when they read from or write to files that are only available from a secondary storage media. If this service is stopped, notification will not occur. | OS (?): | 2000 Server, Server 2003 | Startup (?): | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | This service is a component of Remote Storage. The purpose is to migrate infrequently used files to backup media, typically to tape. This has the benefit that the system automatically cleans up space that you may consider wasted since it's used infrequently and if they need the files in the future then they can be retrieved.
The purpose of this particular service is to notify users that the file they requested is not readily available and that there may be a delay in accessing the file. As such this service can be disabled if you don't require the notifications. However, you will most likely want this service running if you are using Remote Storage. If you are not then you can remove this feature from the Add / Remove Components. |

"Oh yes. That's how it starts. But the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter then we think... For the first link the chain is formed. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." --Captain Jean Luc Picard (ST TNG, Drumhead)
