Services Utility: File Replication Service Display Name (?): | File Replication | Short Name (?): | NtFrs | Executable (?): | ntfrs.exe | Library (?): | None. | Depends On (?): | COM+ Event System, Event Log, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) | Supports (?): | None. | Description (?): | Allows files to be automatically copied and maintained simultaneously on multiple servers. If this service is stopped, file replication will not occur and servers will not synchronize. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. | OS (?): | NT4 Server, 2000 Server, Server 2003, Vista Server | Startup (?): | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The file replication service is used in maintaining syncronized directories on multiple servers in a domain. It does this simultaneously and replicates the system volume SYSVOL to all properly authenticated domain controllers. This service can also work in conjunction with the distributed file system (DFS) allowing files to be replicated to configured targets. If you do not wish to use this feature on your server it is best to uninstall it through the add/remove components dialog rather than disabling it. This service also greatly differs between NT4 and 2000+. |

"Oh yes. That's how it starts. But the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter then we think... For the first link the chain is formed. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." --Captain Jean Luc Picard (ST TNG, Drumhead)
