Services Utility: DNS Server Service | Display Name (?): | DNS Server | | Short Name (?): | DNS | | Executable (?): | dns.exe | | Library (?): | None. | | Depends On (?): | NT LM Security Support Provider, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) | | Supports (?): | None. | | Description (?): | Answers query and update requests for Domain Name System (DNS) names. | | OS (?): | NT4 Server, 2000 Server, Server 2003, Vista Server | | Startup (?): | | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The DNS server service provides the domain name system functionality to your server. This is used primarily in two ways. The first is the standard cascading of Internet naming servers. The second is through the use of active directory. The purpose of using active directory through DNS lookups is that NETBIOS is inferior compartively. Chances are that if you are running a server that you will definitely want the DNS server service unless running, but if not you should uninstall it from the add/remove components dialog rather then just disabling the service. |

"Oh yes. That's how it starts. But the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter then we think... For the first link the chain is formed. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." --Captain Jean Luc Picard (ST TNG, Drumhead)
