The WMI performance adapter service provides performance counters for the the Performance Data Helper, or PDH. Normally data can be obtained for PDH devices from either logs or real-time sources, but in this case the WMI performance adapter service obtains its data from WMI High Performance providers. The WMI High Performance providers are special API routines that allow quick performance data retrieval through the WMI scripting interface. The system monitor (sysmon), for example, can be used to track performance counters for PDH elements of WMI.
In simpler terms this is a fancy way of saying this service provides performance monitoring abilities for WMI. If you are not sure what WMI then you should not be too worried about it. The function of WMI is just to provide scripting interfaces to allow for easier remote management on corporate / business networks. So if you aren't a network administrator and don't have one, then you should not concern yourself with this service.
This service can be safely disabled, although you could just leave it set to manual since it only activates if required and it is highly unlikely it will ever be needed, unless you're on a corporate network like stated before. |
