The DHCP server service can only be found on server versions of Windows. It is used to respond to client DHCP broadcast requests. If enabled this service will respond to all DHCP requests appropriately. By this it means that a client computer that renews its DHCP lease (or begins one) through a broadcast will be answered by the DHCP server service of a properly configured DHCP server. It will then provide network settings including the client's new IP address, subnet mask, DNS servers, WINS servers, etc. if the client is allowed to do so.
It is highly recommended that you only use this service if you understand the implications of running your own DHCP server. This is especially important on networks that already have a properly configured DHCP server as multiple DHCP servers can wreak havoc on a network. If disabled the server will not distribute network settings to computers that request it. However, it is highly recommended to uninstall the DHCP server service rather than just disable it through the Add/Remove components dialog. |
