Services Utility: Windows Media Connect (WMC) Service | Display Name (?): | Windows Media Connect (WMC) | | Short Name (?): | WmcCds | | Executable (?): | mswmccds.exe | | Library (?): | None. | | Depends On (?): | RPCSS, UPNPHOST, WmcCdsLs | | Supports (?): | None. | | Description (?): | Serves shared multimedia content to Universal Plug and Play devices | | OS (?): | Third party or non-default | | Startup (?): | | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | | Manual | Manual | Manual | Manual | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The Windows media connect (WMC) service provides the ability for universal plug and play (UPnP) devices to be detected and used seamlessly with Windows Media Player 10. UPnP is mainly designed to be used by Ethernet and Wireless (802.11) connections so that your computer detects and configures devices on the network without the need for much or any configuration. Needless to say this service is a security risk, but luckily it is only started when started by another program. I imagine this service would be initiated if the other UPnP services detect a WMC enabled device on the network. I suggest that you leave this service set to manual if you ever intend to use this feature. If you do not plan to use it then I would suggest disabling the other UPnP services as they are a potential security risk. |

"Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship[...] Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." - Herman Goering: Intelligence office interview at Nuremberg, 1946/4/18
